Only Painful Cavity Brings Patient to Dentist
Apr 29th
We all know that dental health is very much ignored in this country. Even today when we boast of so-much technological advancement, the only treatment available to a common man is extraction of the painful tooth—that’s all. And this process goes on till majority of teeth meet the same fate –or the person gets frustrated to the extent that he opts for removal of remaining teeth to get an artificial denture.
And lucky are those who can afford to go to a qualified dentist for even dental extraction. Otherwise, quacks can play with their not only dental health but with overall well-being as well by using infected needles, unsterilized instruments, dispensing spurious medicines, prescribing steroids for common dental ailments and so on.
Concept of regular periodic check-up is almost non-existant. My liberal estimate is that after one thousand patients, I get a patient who comes to me just for a regular check-up.
Mixed-Dentition Phase Requires Extra Attention

When we study dentistry, there is a separate subject of Children Dentistry .. Pedodontia. Prof Taneja, our great teacher of Pedodontia used to always remind us that parents of children in the age group 6-12 years should be made aware about this “mixed dentition period”.
By the “mixed dentition period”, we mean it is a mixed phase in which milk teeth co-exist with permanent teeth in this age group. The milk teeth (deciduous teeth) are gradually shedding off making room for the succedaneous permanent tooth –(succedaneous appears to be big word—never mind, it is just the term for the permanent tooth that is take place of a milk tooth!
Generally, all parents have their own perceptions but a common perception is that in children all these are milk teeth. No, it is not true—in fact as early as 6-year old child can have four permanent molars in his mouth —one in each quadrant. However, sheer out of ignorance, the parents think all teeth are deciduous (milk teeth) — hence in majority of cases, when that tooth gets cavity, hardly anybody bothers. Ultimately, in a few years it is quite difficult to save that tooth – only Root canal treatment and crowning can manage but just a very few patients can afford such treatment.

In whatsoever profession we work, we can seldom afford to forget our great teachers. I also fondly remember our great Professor (Dr) Kapila, who used to teach us Oral Surgery in Govt Dental College Hospital at Amritsar. He always used to advise us that you should listen to the patient carefully, he is giving you the diagnosis. Now, I feel we need to introspect how much we do follow his great words!
