Mandibular tori

Mandibular tori

This the photograph of a 50year old man who had come to me with some dental complaint. When I noticed these Mandibular tori, I enquired from him about their presence. He was blissfully unaware of their presence.

However, during my practice I have noticed that such swellings can cause cancer phobia in some people. They think this is a sort of cancer only.

What are these anyway? –there is absolutely nothing serious about these swellings. There are harmless bony growth present on the lowe jaw bone (mandible) –these are bony hard and these don’t require any treatment. The patients who are too conscious about their presence are just need to be reassured that presence of these is no big deal. These are harmless structures –just bony structures. These are known as Mandibular tori (singular : Torus)- also called Torus mandibularis.

Sometimes, such bony hard structures are seen on the hard palate near midline and are called Torus palatinus. These are also harmless structures and throughout life of an individual, these hardly give rise to any symptoms.

Diastema in upper teeth

Spacing in-between teeth : Diastema

In this dental photograph of this patient, you can notice spacing between upper front teeth – in fact, his gums are in reasonably good health. And these spaces are there –called diastema—but don’t have any clinical signifance. But there is a widely prevalent myth in India – people with wide spaces in between their teeth are rich people. Obviously, there is no reason to believe it!
